Denim Day is a day-long observance dedicated to raising awareness about consent and prevention and sexual violence. Wear denim with a purpose… Denim Day has been internationally celebrated since 1999 in protest of an Italian High Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. Enraged by the verdict, women of the Italian Legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. Wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Last year, on Denim Day an unprecedented 1,000,000 individuals and organizations signed up to wear jeans in support of raising awareness about the need to end sexual violence.
The NJ Senate voted in 2008 to designate April 28 of each year as “Denim Day,” to promote rape awareness throughout the State of New Jersey. 

On April 28, 2010, New Jersey will celebrate its 3rd annual Denim Day. Universities, colleges, junior high and high schools, businesses, organizations and individuals will participate in Denim Day events and join the campaign—step forward take a stand against violence against woman.

Cherry Hill Mall will be partnering with the Center for Family Service during the month of April to help raise awareness for Denim Day. The Center for Family Services is the area's provider for programming in aid and assistance for victims of sexual abuse and trauma.
